Profiles in LEADership, Meet Devin & Jared Kimmey

Devin Kimmey

LEAD 2012 was one of the best experiences for me. It helped me improve in many ways and has overall bettered my life. I am now a junior at Great Mills High School, in the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) program, and currently taking 4 AP classes including Biology, Calculus, World History, and Language & Composition. I have been a part of the Varsity Golf and Varsity Swim team since my freshman year. This fall I earned the Sportsmanship Award for Varsity Golf. It’s an award given to one person on the team that shows the most teamwork and sportsmanship. I have been on the Honor Roll every year and have been ranked in the top 10% of my class. I am currently starting my college search and have my eyes set the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland.

LEAD has helped me improve my teamwork skills, my communication skills, and my overall leadership skills. I also met many people, that without LEAD I would have never met. As part of STEM, I am required to find and have an internship this coming summer, and these skills will greatly help me receive an internship. I hope to have an internship with an engineer, preferably a nuclear engineer, because that is the field of engineering that I am greatly interested in. I am now fully active in more activities. After school I do a sport or theatre. Golf in the fall, swimming in the winter and either track or theatre in the spring. I am also an officer in the Great Mills Drama Club and a member of the Great Mills Key Club, a club the focuses on charity work and volunteering.

Within the next couple of months I plan to start on some college visits. I just applied for the Naval Academy Summer Seminar, and plan to take the ACT for the first time and the SAT for my second time. I’m trying to get my SAT score above my 2000 score goal as my first SAT score was a 1730. So I’m not that far off. Hopefully, with me being more active in extracurricular activities and more open to people, I can achieve my current goals, and goals that come up in the future.

 Jared Kimmey

Participating in LEAD 2012 was one of the best experiences of the summer. It not only improved my leadership abilities but also my social abilities as well. I am a junior in Great Mills High School of St. Mary’s County. I am also in the STEM program, which incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics into my education. This year I am very busy taking four AP courses as well as doing multiple sports. My AP courses include Calculus, Physics, World History, and English. These courses proved to be harder than I originally thought, but I’m always up for a challenge. In the fall, I was a part of the Varsity Cross Country team and also participated in the Fall Season of American Legion Baseball. Both seasons ended off really well and I had a lot of fun throughout both seasons. During the winter, I am working on becoming a major contributor to the Great Mills Varsity Baseball pitching rotation and so far it is working out really well.

LEAD has not only helped improve my overall leadership skills but it has also helped me open up to people faster. Through LEAD I have made many friends from many schools and counties, whom I hope to all see again this summer. I have also started to open up more to my coaches and teammates from multiple sports. These skills will increase my chances of receiving a summer internship, which is required to graduate from the STEM program. I am hoping to receive my internship in an engineering field, but I am still unsure about which field to follow into. So an internship will help me slim down my choices.

I am looking forward for some college visits soon. I would like to go to an excellent engineering school but also play baseball at the college level. To do this I will need to continue to work hard towards good grades as well as getting a good SAT score, preferably a score of at least 1900. LEAD has really opened up my mind towards everything and I hope that my new skills will continue to help me in life.

Leadership With A Passion: Meet Jessica Lynch

Jessica Lynch, SPHR, is a 2012 graduate of Leadership Southern Maryland.  Jessica is also a distance runner, and in 2012 combined her quest for marathon #12 with the desire to put her mileage to good use by partnering with the ING Run for Something Better Campaign at the New York City Marathon.  Jessica raised almost $3,000, surpassing her goal, but the dream to run NYC was put on hold temporarily due to Hurricane Sandy relief efforts in the five Burroughs.

In 2012, Jessica ran 7 marathons - putting her lifetime marathons at 11.  Jessica also ran a 25K, 8 half marathons, 3 ten milers, a 10 mile relay, a 5K (first in her age group), and the Warrior Dash.  Because of the back to back (to back) racing events, Jessica holds membership in the Half Fanatics (http://www.halffanatics.com/) and the Marathon Maniacs (http://www.marathonmaniacs.com/).

In August, Jessica was the race director for the Women in Defense 3rd Annual 5K/10K, which donates all proceeds to local scholarships and STEM related activities.  Registration for the 4th Annual event will start this summer!

In 2013, Jessica has already competed in the Resolution Run on New Year's Day, where she took first in her age group, and Ragnar Relay - a 197 mile race from Miami to Key West.  Jessica is looking forward to her first ultra (50K) in February, and is planning back to back (that's it) marathons on Saint Patrick's Day weekend.  Hopefully, 2013 will see the realization of completing the NYC Marathon as well.

Jessica is crossing into triathlons in 2013, hoping to complete her first half Ironman by the end of the year, making way towards a full Ironman in 2014/15.

When Jessica is not running, she works as the Organization and Workforce Planning and Analysis Division Head for the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) in the Total Force Strategy and Management Department.   She specializes in data analytics and business intelligence for the Command.  In order to pay for her racing habit, Jessica concurrently teaches undergraduate courses in Human Resources for the University of Maryland, University College.  Jessica is also the Vice President for the Women in Defense (WID) - Chesapeake Bay Chapter, and is a member of Society for Women Engineers (SWE) and Federally Employed Women (FEW).

Jessica earned a Bachelor of Science in Decision and Information Technology and a Master of Science in Human Resources Management from the University of Maryland.  Additionally, she earned a post graduate certificate from Cornell University in Human Resources, and holds Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) and "Green Belt" Lean Six Sigma certifications.

Jessica is a mother of 3, including Siena who is an alum of LEAD 2012.  Jessica currently lives in Calvert County, and has previously lived in Virginia, Massachusetts, Alabama, Florida, California, Texas, Louisiana, Hawaii, and Japan.

Profiles in LEADership:Meet Nelson Gorrick

Hi! My name is Nelson Gorrick, a senior attending Leonardtown High School. I have participated in Model United Nations and Indoor Track for four years and I plan to run Outdoor Track in the spring as well. I am a member of our high school’s National Honor Society and have been on the highest Honor Roll all four years of high school. In addition to this, I am also a member of Leonardtown High School’s Global and International Studies (GIS) program which is geared towards providing students with knowledge of world regions, cultures, and global/international issues. Being in the program has made my thirst for knowledge of the world grow immensely over the last four years. Despite my love of history and international affairs, I plan to study engineering at the United States Naval Academy starting in June of 2013.

Last year when my real college search began, I was eager to apply to the schools that had captured my interest for years. Despite my father being in the United States Navy for 25 years and living in an area with a strong military presence, I never really thought about applying to any of the service academies. In one of the many college discussions my parents and I had, my dad brought up applying to service academies and attending the Naval Academy’s Summer Seminar. Again, I thought nothing of it, but applied to Summer Seminar anyway. I got into Summer Seminar and as time grew nearer for me to attend, my interest in the Naval Academy grew. Summer Seminar was a blast! While living on campus in historic Annapolis, I experienced first-hand what it would be like to be a Midshipman at the Naval Academy. I awoke for morning physical training and ate in Bancroft Hall with my squad and squad leader. In addition, I attended workshops and classes that echoed those of the academy and also learned how to march during drill instruction. I met people from all across America and gained a love for the Academy that no college could best. Once I returned, I immediately started my application to the Naval Academy. I applied using my state nomination sources and a Presidential nomination source. I sent off my application the first week in September. Two weeks later, I received my Presidential Appointment package in the mail, being one of the first candidates to be accepted to the United States Naval Academy for the Class of 2017.

I owe my acceptance to the Naval Academy to the encouragement of my family and friends, as well as attending the LEAD program. The LEAD program made me better at setting and attaining goals, improving my communication skills and fine-tuning my group-work skills. The leadership that I will learn at the Naval Academy will be an extension from what I’ve already learned from LEAD. A warm reminder of the people that I met at LEAD, is knowing that two of my friends who went to LEAD and Advanced Leadership Seminar (ALS) with me will be also joining me at the Naval Academy on June 27, 2013 for Induction Day. I look forward to graduating from Leonardtown High School in May, the experience at the Academy, and my life in the Navy afterwards. And as always…GO NAVY, BEAT ARMY!!!
